Commissions

Commissioning a unique painting is not something that you do very often in your life, so most of my clients are embarking on this exciting journey for the very first time. The creation of an art work can take several twists and turns, before it gets actualised.  My paintings have found homes in Hong Kong, a private island in between Vancouver and Seattle, California, Scotland, Jersey and the UK.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN COMMISSIONING AN ARTWORK

  • The type of feeling you are after or story you wish to tell - calming and restful or perhaps something the eye can wonder across and discover new passages over time.

  • The desired position of the painting within the property - which wall in what room.

  • whether you would like to include specific objects that are meaningful to you - shells, flowers, ceramics, or a particular landscape.

Case Studies

Flora: Hong Kong - Art at the hub of a busy family home

Flora approached me whilst having an architect designed apartment built for her young family in an elevated position in Hong Kong. As part of it’s creation, she engaged in a collaborative design-led process with an interior designer and artisan creators worldwide to create a restful and beautiful home for her young family.

She came across my paintings on Instagram and wanted to explore a large commissioned artwork - 150 x 100cm - to hang above a key piece of furniture being made in Italy, a bespoke pistachio green sideboard - in the dining room and that was a focal point of the living space.

Conversations flowed and ideas were explored. The finest conservation grade linen on an aluminium stretcher was selected, as the inherent properties of the linen are of the finest quality and it makes sense to use such a canvas in a location with high humidity, as the metal structure, will withstand any atmospheric movement.

The resulting painting was a warm-toned winter landscape set in the Avon Valley, which shows the structure of native trees, field contours, well-used rabbit runs, gorse clumps and undulating country side. It sits on a wall that is painted in Farrow and Ball Sulking Room Pink and above the fabulous sideboard made in Italy. It has become a focal point of dinner party conversations and a part of a dynamic family life.

Julia: Edinburgh, Scotland - A reflective piece with a sense of place

Julia came to me after a personal recommendation and was trying to find a piece of art for her home in Edinburgh, which would complement the far ranging views of the historic city and the beautiful quality of light.

She had seen my still-life paintings and wanted something that picked up on some of the objects she had seen in previous works, such as flowers and fruit, but of a size and feeling that was aligned to the specific sense of place in her Edinburgh home.

Julia liked the rich hues and detail found in Hellebores, which I love to paint, and fruit such as figs and quinces, that are sensual and evocative of particular seasons.

Julia’s painting, is also on conservation grade linen canvas, and has dark blackcurranty coloured Hellebores and dirty golden quinces as is a wintery windowsill still life.

She has since purchased another work from the studio.

Starting the Process

A commissioned work normally starts with a meeting or phone conversation that kicks off a collaborative process and can involve as little or as much interaction as you would like.

I work with clients in many countries via email, phone or video calls and usually allow 4 - 6 weeks to complete a painting, depending on size. I initially send a collage of sketched ideas, colours and imagery for your approval. Once agreed on the direction you would like the painting to go, the bespoke canvas/panel is ordered, and work starts. Images of your painting will be sent halfway through the process, to see if you are happy with the direction of the piece.

50% of the purchase price is paid at the beginning of the commission, and 50% upon completion.

HOW IS PAYMENT HANDLED?

Payments can be made through BACs or PayPal in British Pounds Sterling. You do not need to have a PayPal account to purchase; you can use the PayPal service to pay with your regular debit or credit card.
